Professor Zach Koto, an internationally recognized surgeon from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), is a National Research Foundation (NRF)–rated researcher whose work has earned a prestigious C3 rating following rigorous national and international evaluation. He currently serves as the President of the Association of Surgeons of South Africa. His leadership, academic contributions, and pioneering efforts continue to shape modern surgical practice and inspire the next generation of surgeons.

In 2016, a group of committed MBChB students partnered with Professor Zach Koto, Head of General Surgery and a leading figure in Minimal Access Surgery and Surgical Research, to establish this organization. Since its inception, it has remained dedicated to supporting and empowering medical students. The organization actively collaborates with fellow student surgical societies and industry partners who share a commitment to advancing surgical innovation and research.
